Family is
a basic social unit
consisting of parents and their children
considered as a group,
whether living together or not
But family is
so much more
Family is a single mother
a singing her daughter to sleep
every night
Family is a single father
spending hours on a lake dock
fishing pole in hand and a soda on the side
Serenity interrupted by laughter
Family is opening a door
and suddenly having
a furry body jumping at your legs
and feeling like the house is empty and cold
without one there
Family is knowing
someone else's kitchen and house
like the back of your hand
Family is photo after photo
of two first graders
turning into two highschoolers
Family is not talking for six months
and picking back up
like only a day has passed
Family is a girl walking up
to a group at volleyball tryouts
and asking about Harry Potter
Now I talk to that girl
every day
Family is whispered conversations in the dark
about the future
and the past
and alternate realities
Family is staying up 'til 3am
to watch a piece of history unfold
and wanting to start a revolution after
Family is talking to a stranger
for a good twenty minutes because
I understood that reference
on their shirt
Family doesn't end with blood
Shouldn't family be chosen?
