Connotation of Purity
By Jaclyn Parris

Purity is the absence of anything harmful,
 Inferior,
And unwanted

But purity is more than that

Purity is remaining
Unaware of
The contents
Behind locked doors

Purity is clean clothing
Folded in a basket
With the fresh smell
Of detergent

Purity is a single
White rose;
The first blossom
Of May

Purity is the natural essence
Of beauty
Like a girl
Without make-up

Purity is a girl having
A first kiss
Innocently imagining
Her wedding day

Purity is a young smiling man
With his two year old
Daughter on his shoulders
Touring the zoo

Purity is an old man
Purchasing yellow lemonade
From his smiling
Grandchildren

Purity is sitting beneath
The blue sky
Finding abstract animals
In the clouds

Purity is the cool sky
Surrounding the chilly ocean
The evening awaiting
Tossing of the sandy beach

Purity is drinking water
From the source of a surging waterfall
Cascading down the side
 Of an icy mountain

Purity is flat grey pebbles
Lining the bottom
Of the neighborhoods
Bubbling brook

Purity is a rock
Weathered
To finally form
A smooth grey heart

Purity is snacking
On a cheerio necklace
Worn around your neck
For the first day of Kindergarten

Purity is the unmarked territory
Of the sun
Burning to heat the
Ground we walk upon

Purity is the man in the moon
Calling children
To their tidy
 And cozy beds.

Purity is a child dozing off
After read to
From a crease less
Children’s book

Purity is lifting the cover
Of a new book
Breathing in the smell
Of paper and ink

Purity is a young
Giggling boy
Skipping down the street
Gripping his grinning mother’s hand

Purity is giving
A child their first cone
Of creamy vanilla ice cream
And wiping it from their sticky chin

Purity is a playground
Full of children
Closely watched by
Their parents

Purity is easily lost
Why is so quickly lost by bearers
If beholders wish it was theirs
 To treasure?
